Event-full Times July 2016
You may know that I only recently set up The Prayer Mat Company. I sold my first Prayer Mat on 16th June 2016 that was a happy day! (Someone out there wanted my product yey!!).
When I decided to embark on this journey all I knew was that I wanted to create a Plain Prayer Mat that would blend in with today’s homes and work environment. Whether you’re a home owner or a company it feels great to be surrounded by nice furniture, beautifully designed interiors and then we have these ancient Prayer Mats full of patterns and colours probably made in the 1950’s that match nothing and are still widely in circulation today across the globe. There was no contemporary alternative, so I designed and made one and The Prayer Mat Company was born.
It had to be a British product and after months of knocking on doors (mainly being told don’t bother or we can’t help) I met some amazing people who helped bring my vision to life.
Time to let the world know I’m ready for business… I wanted maximum exposure on a shoe string budget and you know what social media totally Rocks. I’m loving it, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and not to mention becoming an overnight YouTube sensation!!! (ok so maybe not a YouTube sensation quite just yet but a few hundred people watched my intro video!).
I decided to attend some Fayres/ Fun Day events which are generally organised and attended by Muslims to help me raise awareness of The Prayer Mat Company. These are mostly outdoors where you have a table and display your products in a market style environment. My first event was a complete flop, people didn’t even approach my stall. The second event wasn’t much better as you can’t control the weather and as a Southerner I discovered it rains a lot up north (even in July!) but I wasn’t disheartened. My passion for my Prayer Mats certainly came across to other stall holders, customers and passers-by.
It was fantastic having a stall at Ilmfest which is an indoor Islamic Conference held at The O2 Intercontinental Hotel organised by AlMaghrib Institute. The speakers and the attendees loved them, for 24 hours I was all over Snap Chat. The feedback was extremely positive. They loved the colours and the simplicity!
I realised some event work whilst other just don’t. My most recent event was having a stall at Living Islam, feedback was very positive and I’m enjoying the customer interaction. Meeting other business owners and entrepreneurs who truly supported me has really helped lift my spirits and there are some people who truly have gone out their way to help me and I won’t forget their kind words and help. One brother even went to B&Q during my event in Oldham to buy me a gazebo as it was raining – I have no idea who he was but may Allah bless him for his kindness.
This is just the start of my journey 6 weeks into trading and the Plan for August is just as exciting so make sure you keep an eye out for The Prayer Mat Company!
Dream Big & Stay Happy Always.
